// The rules for using LocIX

Terms of Service

These terms cover how you join and use LocIX. Read them before you connect. Last updated 30 May 2026.

1 About LocIX

1

LocIX is a multi-location Internet Exchange run as a non-profit project. LOCIX LIMITED operates it, registered at 85 Great Portland Street, First Floor, London, England, W1W 7LT.

1.1

Membership is free. You pay no membership fee.

1.2

The team runs LocIX in their free time. Provisioning, configuration and support depend on volunteer availability, so delays can happen.

2 Membership

2

You need your own ASN and the ability to announce routes over BGP to join.

2.1

You get 1 ASN per port. A second ASN needs a second membership and a second port.

2.2

You connect over a cross-connect, or through an approved reseller or partner. The Reseller & Partner Policy sets those rules.

2.3

Remote membership is not allowed. You cannot reach LocIX through a GRE or VPN tunnel.

3 Acceptable use

3

You use LocIX to exchange traffic with other operators. That is its only purpose.

3.1

You cannot use the peering LAN for Layer 2 transport between datacenters.

3.2

You announce only routes you are authorised to announce. You keep your BGP sessions and prefix filters correct.

3.3

You send only traffic that belongs on a peering LAN. No proxy ARP, no spoofed MAC, no flooding, and no traffic to addresses you hold no session with.

3.4

You keep one MAC address per port unless the team agrees otherwise.

4 Your responsibilities

4

You keep your contact details current in PeeringDB and IXP Manager so the team can reach you.

4.1

You secure your own router and connection. You are responsible for what your ASN sends.

4.2

Not knowing the rules does not remove your responsibility to follow them.

5-7 Service & liability

5

LocIX is provided as is and as available. You get no SLA and no uptime guarantee.

5.1

The team makes a best effort to keep the fabric and route servers running. Maintenance, outages and delays can still happen.

5.2

LocIX can change, suspend or withdraw any part of the service at any time.

6

LocIX and LOCIX LIMITED accept no liability for any loss or damage from your use of the service. This includes lost traffic, lost revenue, downtime and data loss. You use LocIX at your own risk.

7

LocIX can deny any application without giving a reason.

7.1

LocIX can disconnect you immediately if you break these terms or the Reseller & Partner Policy.

7.2

Using LocIX outside its purpose, such as L2 transport between datacenters, results in immediate disconnection and exclusion without justification.

8-11 General terms

8

If you connect members through a reseller or partner, the Reseller & Partner Policy applies in full. Read it before you apply.

9

LocIX can update these terms at any time. The current version always lives on this page. Continued use means you accept the latest version.

10

These terms follow the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales handle any dispute.

10.1

LocIX processes personal data under both the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR. The Privacy Policy explains how.
